PIRATES IN CUBA
La Habana vieja – Old Havana is a place that takes you to another time. Streets are always full of people, and on every corner, you will discover something new and exciting.
Let’s take a ride to the 16th century. Let us tell you a story of Pirates in Cuba.
Havana at the time didn’t have its fortresses to defend the city. Only fort was Fuerza vieja. The city was vulnerable, and one evil French pirate called de Sores decided to take advantage.
He expected to find tones of gold and treasure.
He didn’t find anything.
He got furious. Started to burn the city and destroy Fuerza Vieja. Most of Havana was burned, house by house robed, ships in harbor completely devastated, many people died.
And then he left.
Spanish government started to build fortresses. First, Castillo de la Real Fuerza inside the bay, that is now part of World UNESCO heritage site.
Later they constructed Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro. It got its name by big stone El Morro where it was built. On the opposite shore, they built San Salvador de la Punta fortress to defend the port better.
